Blue Buoy Family Swim School has been part of the Tustin/Orange County community for 65 years. They are dedicated to serving our families and place great importance on actively supporting our local schools and non-profit organizations. Founded in 1956 by Mel and Doris Maxwell, Blue Buoy dramatically changed the way children learn to swim by focusing on each student’s needs through smaller classes, warmer water and a loving manner that emphasizes fun.
That philosophy continues today with owners Johnny & Cindy Johnson. Johnny (aka, Mr. Tustin) and Cindy have presented internationally and received numerous awards for their leadership in learn-to-swim and water safety. Johnny is one of Blue Buoy’s many 3-generation families. He is in his 54th year of teaching–currently alongside his son and grandchildren. Cindy’s emphasis is behind the scenes with their amazing office staff. They work tirelessly to make your busy life easier with flexible scheduling options and generous make-up policies.
Blue Buoy Family Swim School understands the importance of consistency and building trust for learning. All of their teachers are year-round, excellent swimmers, comprehensively trained in extraordinary philosophy and methods and CPR/First Aid certified. They love children and are dedicated to their success. Many of their teachers have been part of the Blue Buoy Family since they learned here as children!
Spacious decks around our the beautiful pools allow small family groups to sit together in the fresh air and cheer on their swimmers. Our large dedicated parking lots are an added bonus that makes life easier for our families.
Blue Buoy’s slogan is “Great beginnings…lead to Great finishes.” Each student develops at their own pace, growing in confidence, ability and water safety. Their emphasis on building a solid foundation of balance, breath control, and relaxed streamline movement makes the transition to competitive strokes and other activities seamless. While not all students may choose to go into water-related competition, Blue Buoy Family Swim School is proud of the 10 former students who have become Olympians and World Record Holders as well as countless All American High School and NCAA swimmers, water polo players, teachers and coaches.
